The Azores... Where Are They, You Ask?

Azores sao miguel sete cidades walking pathI remember asking this very question when I was first asked if I wanted to go to The Azores. I soon discovered that The Azores are one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal. This archipelago is composed of nine volcanic islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean about...

...1,360 km west of continental Portugal, about 1,507 km from the African coast, and about 1,925 km southeast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The nine islands that make up The Azores are divided into three groups: the eastern (Sao Miguel and Santa Maria islands), the central (Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial islands), and the western (Flores and Corvo islands). The Azores, along with the archipelagos of Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde, constitute the biogeographic region of Macaronesia, a name which means "fortunate islands" for those who live there and visit them.

These islands are beautiful and a nature lovers paradise with its sapphire blue and emerald green lakes, fertile prairies, volcanic cones and craters, colorful hydrangeas and azaleas, 15th century churches, and hiking trails.

Over the next several weeks, I will be sharing more information about some of these islands; each island having a different story to tell. Sao Miguel Island, the largest of the islands; Terceira Island with its capital a UNESCO Heritage Site; Faial Island known for its famous yacht harbour and the beautiful tiles and gilded carvings in their 17th and 18th century churches and Pico Island known for its unique vineyard which is an UNESCO Heritage Site and its 2,351m high volcanic cone….that you can hike to the top of!
